Tsuboniwa At The Heart

Location: Yakushima, Japan
Program: Hospitality
Status: Competition
Year: 2025

The project is informed by both vernacular and contemporary Japanese architectural traditions,
drawing inspiration from the historic rural Japanese homes, kominka (traditional old Japanese
house), while engaging with contemporary Japanese design. The house is closely attuned to the
natural and cultural context of Yakushima Island. Set within an environment of ancient forests,
mist, and water, the architecture aims to foster a tranquil and introspective mode of living that
coexists harmoniously with its surroundings rather than asserting dominance over them. The overall
massing is influenced by the proportional logic of traditional tatami-based geometries, specifically
the yojōhan (four-and-a-half–tatami) with Shukugi-jiki (auspicious) configuration. The dwelling is
articulated as four primary volumes arranged around a central courtyard garden, a spatial strategy
that draws the landscape into the core of the home.
